Today’s photo joins today’s Google Doodle in honoring late-Renaissance physicist Laura Bassi. The Basilica San Petronio above sits in Bologna, Italy, where Bassi, with the help of the archbishop of the city, defended her scientific theses and received a doctorate–the first doctorate of science ever awarded to a woman, and the second doctorate awarded to a woman, period. The basilica originates in the year 1390, so it can be nearly guaranteed that Bassi herself laid eyes upon it. It is ironically thanks to the usually traditional Catholic Church–or, more accurately, one Mr. Labertini within it–that she was able to have her ideas heard and spread.
