Johannes Gutenberg–the inventor of the printing press and subject of today’s Google Doodle–was born and died in Mainz, Germany. (He did, however, relocate to France for about 20 years to avoid being killed in a craftsman’s revolt.) The first major book to be printed and distributed using his methods was, of course, the 42-line-per-page Gutenberg Bible, first printed in 1455 in his very own shop. Hence today’s photo of Mainz Cathedral (built 975-1009 C.E.), which looks quite the same now as it did in Gutenberg’s day. What must he have thought, glancing up at it? We imagine he prayed for funds.
