In honor of April Fools’ Day, we present to you a rather horrifying sculpture in the Sainte-Chapelle (on the old palace grounds) in Paris, France. The holiday reportedly originates here with France’s early switch from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar. Those who held to the Julian, which begins in April, were deemed fools for doing so, particularly on the old “new year’s day”. The evolution of the holiday into its current state is apparently unknown.
